How to organize your closet

With the change of the season, now is a good time to take inventory of your closet and organize it. Many times we have a closet full of clothing and nothing to wear. An oxymoron if I ever heard one! Here are a few tips to get your closet in tip top shape, help you keep your sanity, and find something to wear. Check out this video from Glamour to see it in action or the video from Real Simple below.

The Style Aficionado’s Tips:

  1. Clear your closet. Take everything out item by item, and organize them in the following ways: Keep, Donate (undamaged items that are ugly and don’t fit), Discard (damaged items that are beyond repair), Give Back (things that don’t belong to you), and Tailor (Items that are still in style and may need altering to fit better).
  2. Then divide the clothes into purpose. Work, Transitional, Play. Depending on your lifestyle and location you may have more categories, such as evening, costume or seasonal.
  3. I tend to look from left to right in my closet. The category that you utilize the most should be in the front, or the place you look first. Since I work the most my closet goes from – Work -> Transitional -> Casual ->Cocktail -> Outerwear.
  4. Organize by Color. Remember ROY G BIV? If your wardrobe isn’t as colorful go from light to dark.
  5. Try to keep whites together and separate that section from the others with a garment bag or space to prevent color transfer.
  6. A bar is a great way to get more space and separate tops from bottoms. Use the same order: work, transitional etc…
  7. Go from short to long. Example:  tops: sleeveless -> short sleeve -> 3/4 etc. Then Bottoms —-> skirts -> shorts -> carpi’s -> pants. Lastly, dresses. I usually prefer to place dresses separately or behind pants, just because of their length.
  8. Separate suit pieces. This promotes being able to picture them with items other than their matching counterpart.
  9. Obtain clear storage containers for accessories such as scarves and belts.
  10. Shoes follow the same organization pattern as clothes — work -> transitional -> play -> seasonal; light to dark.
  11. If you don’t have a shoe rack, keep shoes in their boxes or purchase clear shoe boxes and place a Polaroid of the shoe on the outside.
