Ask the Aficionado – What to wear to a funeral or memorial?

Dear Aficionado,

I was watching the Michael Jackson memorial on TV the other night and got to thinking if I ever had to go to a funeral what would I wear? I know it’s not meant to be a fashion show, but I also wouldn’t want to be inappropriate. I am 24 years old, and I have never been a one. My family members are getting older, so I am afraid funerals are in my future.

Answer:

askFunerals are an unfortunate part of life. You are right, it is not a fashion show; But that doesn’t mean you can’t still be fashionable. I firmly believe that one should not pass judgement on what someone wears to a funeral. Many people have different ideas on what is and is not appropriate funeral wear, and this can vary between religions. Dressing appropriately and tastefully is a sign of respect for the family and mourners and luckily isn’t hard to pull off. The key is being able to dress up fashionably but modestly. In some cases your LBD can suffice. Just ensure it is modest, and most importantly, loose and long enough. Consider pairing it with a blazer or cardigan and keep accessories conservative. When it comes to colors; most people associate black with funerals. While this is the safest color choice, it is not the only option.Brights, neon, and metallics are off limits, outside of that almost anything goes as long as it is muted and subdued. Accessories provide a chance to bring in more color, but this is not the time to show off your bling. Diamond studs, pearls and delicate pendants are fail-proof.

Guys have it fairly easy. A dark suit with tie and matching accessories. Follow the same color rules as listed above.

For a viewing or family gathering, going a bit more casual is acceptable, but is still not the time for jeans or flashy-ness.

Key Rules:

  • Nothing revealing, tight, or suggestive
  • No bright colors. That doesn’t mean you can’t wear any colors, but keep them muted or in the earth tones.
  • Do not wear white, unless instructed to by the family.
  • Dresses should have straps or sleeves (no spaghetti straps or halter tops) If your dress is strapless pair it with a blazer or cardigan
